Trypophobia is a psychological condition associated with the fear of clustered holes. Even though you don’t have it – you may potentially get disgusted by the view, so don’t Google!

Trypophobia is considered a “young” disease and is being studied now. The term was coined only in 2005. Many specialists still do not want to distinguish it as a separate kind of fear.

Currently, trypophobia has no single recognized classification. However, there are several basic form of its manifestation: mild (when looking at holes individual experiences anxiety, stress, nervousness); moderate (repetitive circular holes cause unwarranted anxiety, nausea, itching of the skin, the appearance of obsessions, trembling of the limbs); severe (clustered holes provoke panic attacks, dizziness, vomiting, loss of coordination).

All kinds of round holes in food: veinlets or veins, for example in meat, honeycomb, heads of cheese, holes in fruit and vegetables, cavities in leguminous plants also cause a fearful feeling.

Geological basin in rocks or holes in natural resources, as well as holes made in the ground by animals (larvae, worms or caterpillars), cause unpleasant feelings in people suffering from this ailment.

Causes of Trypophobia

Since the disease is not clear, a full list of conditions that can cause trypophobia has not been developed yet. There are many preconditions to explain the occurrence of the disease: heredity, social and psychic experiences, emotional tension, breakdowns, age crises, accumulation of timidity to a critical point as one grows older.

Symptoms of Trypophobia

The variation of representation and intensity of symptoms is varying. The most characteristic features of trypophobia include such reactions when looking at holes:

  • bursts of fear and / or panic of different degrees;
  • the feeling of anxiety;
  • increased sweating;
  • increased heart rate;
  • lack of voluntary coordinationlack of voluntary coordinationobsession;
  • nervousness;
  • itching, redness of the skin;
  • dizziness;
  • nausea, vomiting;
  • tremors in the limbs;
  • muscle spasms;
  • convulsions;
  • loss of consciousness;
  • problems with breathing;
  • ataxia (lack of voluntary coordination).

Symptoms occur because of the following objects:

  • holes in the tissues of animals and humans (acne, miasma, pockmarks, open enlarged pores);
  • holes of natural origin (porous materials, holes from water in rocks, corals);
  • “windows” formed under the influence of living organisms (caterpillars, larvae, and worms, anthills, hives of insects);
  • accumulation of oval holes in food (cheese, honeycomb, bakery products, fruit and vegetables, porous chocolate).

Treatment of Trypophobia

First of all, you should see a doctor who determines the entire range of the desired therapeutic methods:

  • corrective, substitutive methods for mental rehabilitation (alternation of soothing images and image of holes in order to eliminate feelings of discomfort);
  • psychoanalysis;
  • group psychotherapygroup psychotherapydesensitization (a set of measures aimed at the normalization of the physical and psychological self-perception of the patient);
  • individual and group psychotherapy;
  • breathing, calming, relaxing exercises of self-control;
  • sedatives;
  • antiallergic medications;
  • hospitalization and treatment with anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, sedative medications (for severe forms of phobia).

Prevention

No specific preventive measures for this phobia exist. But there are some rules following which you can protect yourself from the appearance of the disease. It is self-control, the development of mental balance and harmony, the ability to avoid life stresses, tensions, emotional distress, and timely visits to a doctor if there are signs of phobia.
